The Royal Scam is Steely Dan's fifth album . It was released in May 1976.
The album went gold and reached number 15 on the charts. The album is relatively guitar-oriented, with Larry Carlton , Denny Dias , Elliott Randall , Walter Becker and Dean Parks playing.
In a 2000 BBC interview, Becker and Fagen said the title Kid Charlemagne was inspired by Owsley Stanley's life story.
Record cover
The album cover shows a man in a suit sleeping on a bench under skyscrapers with animal heads. The cover was designed by Larry Zox. In the liner notes of the 1999 album remaster, Fagen and Becker described the cover as "the ugliest album cover of the seventies, with the possible exception of Can't Buy a Thrill ".
