The Sinister Man (translated "The Scary Man") is a British crime film directed by Clive Donner from 1961 . It was produced by the film company Merton Park Studios . The screenplay comes from the screenwriter Robert Banks Stewart and builds on the novel of the same name by Edgar Wallace (published in German as Turfschwindel ). The film was part of the first half of the Edgar Wallace Mysteries , a series of 47 Edgar Wallace film adaptations made by Merton Park Studios between 1960 and 1965; it was never shown in Germany.
action
After the murder of an Oxford professor of archeology, Superintendent Wills tries to clarify the background to the crime and comes across archaeological finds in which the working group at the "Oriental Research Institute" was interested. He suspects the oriental student Johnny Choto. The young Elsa Marlowe can, however, speak to the American Dr. Overhear Nelson Pollard, who incriminated him. He lived in Korea for some time and is in contact with the Korean embassy, which is interested in the finds. Wills succeeds in convicting Pollard and the ambassador and arresting them.
Reviews
In their Das Edgar Wallace Lexikon from 2004, Joachim Kramp and Jürgen Wehnert cite a review of the film in the 1962 Monthly Film Bulletin . This tears the film apart and describes it as a "consumptive dime novel, without surprise or sophistication". She admits that the director Clive Donner had "a bit of momentum", but emphasized that "the dull conception of this Edgar Wallace assembly line production" thwarted any attempt to "bring in even an approach of good style."
