The Suffering: Ties That Bind is an action computer game developed by the US company Surreal Software for Playstation 2 , Xbox and Windows . It is the sequel to The Suffering and was released by Midway Games in 2005.
In the second part of the series, Torque is accompanied back to his hometown Baltimore. Depending on the completion of the first part, the beginning and some details of the game will also change. The voice that leads the player to “bad” deeds gets its appearance again, as well as some other characters known from the first part.
action
The Suffering: Ties That Bind builds directly on the action of the predecessor and requires it to be understood. After his escape from Carnate Island, Torque was arrested by "the special forces" in the port of Baltimore. This unit investigates everything that is going on around the creatures and therefore arrests anyone who can escape from Carnate. Shortly before the interrogation Torques is to begin, the creatures also appear in Baltimore, allowing Torque to escape. From then on he hunted through the city to visit different places from his past. There he keeps having visions about the mysterious fate of his family. Ultimately, his ultimate goal is to destroy Blackmore, who is to blame for Torque's suffering. After he has fought his way to the Eastern Baltimore detention center, he meets the "ghosts" of several murderers, sadists and madmen who he has to face below the building. Depending on how you played before (good or bad), it works a little differently. After this fight, Torque comes to the surface again, only to see the big showdown with Blackmore in the children's home where he grew up. It turns out that Blackmore doesn't really exist, but that Torque suffers from a split personality whose "dark side" is Blackmore. After defeating Blackmore in the final battle, it dissolves. Then the game ends and both Torques and the monsters in Baltimore remain open.
Gameplay
The Suffering: Ties That Bind is a shooter, both from the first-person view and the third-person perspective can be played, the latter is the default. With the help of a score from the previous player, the second part can be continued with the appropriate attitude. If you don't have the first part, you start the game neutrally. Only after finishing the game can you choose the good or bad variant when you restart.
development
The opponent design of the second part was adapted to the conditions of a big city like Baltimore. So some of the creatures are based on gang wars and drug addiction. However, there are also monsters based on other crimes, such as police violence in the prison system and slavery.
The second part of the series was also cut in the German version.
reception
The Suffering: Ties That Bind received mostly positive reviews ( Metacritic : 73 out of 100 (Win) / 75 (PS2) / 76 (Xbox)).
