The Time is the debut album by The Time group of the same name .

Backgrounds and recordings

In April 1981, Prince formed The Time from parts of the cast of Flyte Time, a Minneapolis -based funk band . Thanks to his previous, commercial solo successes, he was able to negotiate a contractual agreement with his record company Warner Music Group , which allowed him to publish various side projects (sometimes under different names). The Time is Prince's first and so far best known side project.

As songwriter and producer, Prince is solely responsible for the musical and textual events on the album The Time . Most of the album consists of material that Prince recorded at his home in Lake Riley in Chanhassen , Minneapolis . Even if the band's line-up is specified in the credits of the record and Prince is not mentioned in a word, it is certain that Prince produced this album alone. Characteristic of this album is the strikingly frequent use of analog synthesizers and drum machines . This variety of funk was later known as the Minneapolis Sound .

A special feature is that Prince was not noted in the liner notes when it was published. Most of the vocal parts were taken over by Morris Day, who had to act under the direction of Prince.

The album reached number 50 on the Billboard charts and reached gold status for 500,000 records sold.
