The Apollon Theater ( Greek θέατρο "Απόλλων" Theatro Apollon ) is a theater in the western Greek city ​​of Patras . It was designed by the German architect Ernst Ziller and completed in 1872. The theater is located on the northeast side of Platia Georgiou I , one of the large squares in Patras city center. It is a miniature version of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the oldest existing covered theater of this era. Since 1988 it has been the main venue of the Municipal and Regional Theater Patras (Δημοτικό Περιφερειακό Θέατρο (ΔΗΠΕΘΕ) Πάτρας). It has space for 250 people.

history

Construction of the Apollon Theater began on February 11, 1871. The first performance took place on October 10, 1872 with Verdi's Un ballo in maschera . The construction was financed through the efforts of many Patras residents. In the construction committee sat Theodor Hamburger , Dimitrios Patrinos , K. and A. Lappas Chrysanthis.

The then mayor of Patras, Georgios Roufos , as well as Gustav Clauss , Hamburger, Langouras, the Triantis brothers, the Panagiotis brothers, the father of Dimitrios Gounaris , Epaminondas Maximos, father of Dimitrios Maximos belonged to the wider circle of donors .

The theater is one of only three neoclassical theater buildings that have stood the test of time in Greece. The other two are the Malliaropoulio Theater in Tripoli (1910) and the Apollo Theater in Ermoupoli on the Cycladic island of Syros (1864).
