Thelonious in Action: Recorded at the Five Spot Cafe is an album by Thelonious Monk . The recordings, which were made in the New York Club Five Spot on August 7, 1958, appeared in 1958 as a long-playing record on Riverside Records . Expanded by three tracks with a length of over 20 minutes, which came from a Five Spot appearance on July 9, 1958, the album was released in 1988 as a compact disc by Original Jazz Classics .

background

In 1958, Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone), Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass) and Roy Haynes played drums with Monk on the stage of the legendary Five Spot Club . Art Blakey played the drums on the last of the three bonus tracks of the new edition. The recording contains the first recordings of Monk's compositions "Light Blue" and "Coming on the Hudson". Together with Misterioso , which was also recorded at the Five Spot concerts in 1958, Thelonious introduced the quartet formula in Action , which would become a characteristic feature of Monk's subsequent albums, wrote Jack Goldstein.

reception

Johnny Griffin, 2007

Lindsay Planer said in Allmusic , "although Monk is in extraordinary shape, he is far from throwing the only or even brightest light during these unforgettable pages." It is regrettable that this group did not stay together for a long time. Johnny Griffin's aggressive style of performance contains a lyrical and melodic undertone that perfectly complements Monk's sporadic inflections.

According to Jack Goldstein, while Johnny Griffin may not be the saxophonist most commonly associated with Monk's Quartet, it is often praised for his speed, and here he shows what he can do in a long solo, often in an or two familiar quotes.
