Theo Seiler (born February 12, 1949 in Ravensburg ) is a German ophthalmologist and physicist . He is considered one of the pioneers in refractive surgery .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1968 in Ravensburg , Theo Seiler began studying mathematics and physics at the University of Heidelberg in the same year , received the intermediate diploma in physics in 1970, switched to the Free University of Berlin and graduated in 1972 with a degree in physics . He then began studying medicine that same year. In 1975 he received his PhD from the Free University of Berlin with his dissertation "Modulated dynamic nuclear spin polarization on nuclei with a smaller gyromagnetic ratio". rer. nat. received his doctorate and entered the school service for higher schools (subjects mathematics and physics) the following year. At the same time he continued his medical studies and in 1981 passed the medical state examination in Berlin.

In 1982 Seiler was granted his license to practice medicine. Since 1981 he has been an assistant doctor at the Eye Clinic of the Free University of Berlin, where he was appointed Academic Councilor in 1982 and in 1984 with the dissertation "Linearity of Tonometry" as a Dr. med. PhD with summa cum laude. In 1986, Seiler was certified as a specialist in ophthalmology and was also appointed senior physician at the University Eye Clinic of the Free University of Berlin, and in 1989 he was appointed deputy head of this facility. With the scientific thesis "Refractive Corneal Surgery" Seiler completed his habilitation in 1987 at the Free University of Berlin and in 1989 he was appointed professor of ophthalmology.

On October 1, 1993, Theo Seiler accepted the call as professor to the chair for ophthalmology and as director of the clinic and polyclinic for ophthalmology at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital of the TU Dresden . With his appointment as director of the eye clinic at the University of Zurich , Seiler left the Dresden faculty on January 1, 2000.

In October 2002, Seiler founded the "Institute for Refractive and Ophthalmic Surgery" (IROC) in Zurich. His work and research focuses on corneal surgery, in particular refractive corneal surgery , surgery of the anterior segment of the eye and physiological optics.

Seiler is a member of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Swiss Ophthalmological Society (SOG), the American Society of Refractive and Cataract Surgery (ASCRS), the European Cornea Society (EuCornea), the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) and the boards of DOG, ISRS, and EuCornea.
