Siege of Tripoli 1289

Theobald von Bethsan (also Thibaut de Bessan ; † 1289 ) was a knight in the county of Tripoli .

He was the second-born son of Guermond II , Lord of Bethsan , from the French noble family Béthune from his first marriage to Juliane von Soissons. His older brother Baldwin inherited his father as Lord of Bethsan. However, Bethsan had been occupied by Muslims since 1183 and in the following years the Crusaders did not succeed in regaining power, even if they sacked the city in 1264.

He was married to Isabella von Mandelée, daughter of Jakob von Mandelée . With her he had two sons, Balduin (Baudouin) and Walter (Gauthier).

He was among the defenders of the city of Tripoli when it was attacked and besieged by the Mamluks in 1289 . He and his son Baldwin were killed fighting for the city.
