Coordinates: 54 ° 19 ′ 44.1 ″  N , 8 ° 46 ′ 45.5 ″  E The Theodor Mommsen Memorial in Garding is a memorial and museum for the historian and first German Nobel Prize winner in literature Theodor Mommsen . In 1987 it was set up next to the house where he was born.

The richly illustrated exhibition shows Mommsen's life stages, beginning with his childhood in Garding and Bad Oldesloe, his studies in Kiel, then as a professor, scientist and publicist in Leipzig, Zurich and Berlin. Mommsen's private life with family and friends is also examined. Particular attention is paid to his relationship with his birthplace, Garding.

Birthplace

Mommsen's birthplace is the neighboring diaconate building. He was born here on November 30, 1817 as the youngest of six children of the deacon Jens Mommsen and his wife Sophie Elisabeth. In March 1821 the family moved to Bad Oldesloe.

Commemoration in Garding

Appointed an honorary citizen in 1895 , a plaque was unveiled on the house where he was born in the summer of 1903 . In 1911 a memorial was erected to him in the city park . This bronze bust by the Berlin sculptor Heinrich Splieth (1877–1929) was stolen by strangers in the summer of 2000 and has since been considered lost. In the meantime, a cast of the Mommsen bust by the Berlin sculptor Karl Pracht has been placed on the monument base. Since January 1st, 2002 Garding has had the title "Theodor-Mommsen-Stadt".
