Theodor Dilthey (born February 6, 1825 in Rüdesheim am Rhein , † March 22, 1892 ibid) was a German wine merchant and co-founder and first president of the Wiesbaden Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Life

Theodor Dilthey, who was born in 1825 as the son of the wine merchant Ferdinand Friedrich Dilthey (1792–1875), began an apprenticeship in 1839 in his father's company, PFF Dilthey in Rüdesheim am Rhein . After attending the commercial academy in Brussels, he worked as an office clerk and traveler in his father's business, and on March 23, 1852 married Anna Katharina Josepha Marie Sahl (1830–1897), a daughter of the hotel owner Georg Adam Sahl. In the same year Sahl handed over his hotel "Darmstädter Hof" to his sons Adam, Nikolaus and August as well as to his son-in-law, who now also became a partner at PFF Dilthey. After Ferdinand Dilthey retired from business life, Theodor Dilthey and his brothers-in-law Adam, Nikolaus and August Sahl took over the wine shop under the name Dilthey, Sahl & Co. In 1862 Adam and Nikolaus Sahl left the company again, so that Theodor Dilthey and August Sahl now sole shareholder of "Dilthey, Sahl & Co." were.

After major payment defaults, the complete collapse of Dilthey, Sahl & Co. was avoided by converting the company into a partnership limited by shares. The existing large wine store worth 78,000 guilders and the good sales in the business year 1867 convinced Dilthey's creditors of the plan to exchange their claims against bonds of the newly founded Rheinische Actienverein für Weinbau und Weinhandel Dilthey, Sahl & Co. - a total of 800 papers worth 200 thalers / 350 guilders with a term until 1897, which earned interest at 8.5%. In addition, eleven papers were drawn annually, which were paid out in full, which was documented in so-called "raffle protocols". Theodor Dilthey and his brother-in-law August Sahl ran the business together with the third director Fritz Klehe. Theodor Dilthey went on numerous business trips to England and Russia to promote the export of German wines and sparkling wines.

In 1880 Theodor Dilthey handed over the wine wholesale business to his son Johann Ferdinand Dilthey (1855–1912). After Theodor Dilthey's death, the company was converted into a GmbH in 1892. After the other business partners were paid off, his son Johann Ferdinand was finally the sole owner of the wine trading business from 1903. The company was dissolved on December 31, 1968.

In addition to his business activities, Theodor Dilthey still found time for political engagement. He founded the Rüdesheimer Handelsverein and was the first president of the Wiesbaden Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1865 to 1867 .

Theodor Dilthey wrote numerous poems in praise of wine.
