Theodor Ernst

Karl Theodor Heinrich Ernst (born January 3, 1904 in Uelzen ; † February 26, 1983 in Erlangen ) was a German mineralogist and professor at the University of Erlangen .

From 1926 Ernst studied mineralogy at the University of Jena and the University of Göttingen , where he received his doctorate in 1932 ( representation and crystal structure of lithium hydroxide ) and completed his habilitation in 1936 ( The Melilith basalt of the Westberg near Hofgeismar, north of Kassel, an assimilation product of ultrabasic rocks ) . In 1949 he was acting head of the Mineralogical Institute in Erlangen and from 1950 (after briefly working as a full professor in Munich) professor and head of the institute. In 1954 he was rector of the university (rector's speech: The current position of mineralogy ).

The mineral Ernstit described by E. Seeliger and A. Mücke in 1970 is named after him. In 1975 he became an honorary member of the German Mineralogical Society . In 1953 he became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Theodor Ernst was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit on May 14, 1965 .
