Theodor Heuss is the baptismal name of two aircraft in readiness for flight of the Federal Ministry of Defense , which serve as a means of transport for the Federal President , the Federal Chancellor and the Federal Ministers . It is named after Theodor Heuss , the first Federal President of the Federal Republic. The sister aircraft is the Konrad Adenauer .

A310 as "Theodor Heuss" (1991-2010)

The first Theodor Heuss in the service of flight readiness

The first Theodor Heuss was an Airbus A310-304 built in 1989 and was available to the government as a VIP transport. After the end of the GDR in 1991, the aircraft, together with two sister aircraft, was taken over from the inventory of the airline Interflug and converted for use in parliamentary flight operations. The aircraft had the aircraft registration number 10 + 22 . The outer appearance was kept rather simple, initially white with a blue stripe and the words Luftwaffe , then white with a narrow band in the German national colors. The last flight in the service of the federal government took place in June 2010.

In 2011 the aircraft was decommissioned after 20 years and replaced by an Airbus A340-313 of the same name. The old machine was advertised for sale. In November 2011, the Iranian Mahan Air acquired the aircraft through an intermediary from the Ukraine. The fact that at the time, in connection with Iran's nuclear program, there was a trade embargo against the country, which was also supported by Germany, was explosive . In November 2015, the machine was sold to Tehran Airlines and has been in storage since then.

A340 as "Theodor Heuss" (since 2011)

The second Theodor Heuss at Tokyo Haneda Airport

As the successor to the A310, the federal government has an Airbus A340-313 built in 2000 as a machine for VIP transport. After nine years in regular service at Lufthansa, the long-haul aircraft was bought under the name of the Oberberg district town of Gummersbach in 2009 by the readiness for flight of the Federal Ministry of Defense and converted into a government aircraft by Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg from January 2010 . In mid-2013, a laser-based defense system against infrared-guided missiles was retrofitted in the United States. Lufthansa Technik describes the design of the cabin as "timelessly elegant and representative". It has been registered as 16 + 02 since it was moved to the headquarters of the flight readiness at Cologne Airport .
