Theodor Körner (rowing coach)

Theodor Körner (born March 24, 1932 in Berlin ; † October 29, 2016 ) was a German rowing trainer and functionary.

Life

In 1953, Körner was rowing champion of the German Democratic Republic in the lightweight eighth row .

In 1954 he graduated from the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig , the subject of his diploma thesis was "Skill rowing as a basic level for the development of popular rowing". From 1962 to 1986 he was an association trainer in the German Rowing Association (DRSV). Under his leadership, the rowers of the German Democratic Republic won 17 gold medals at the Olympic Games, five silver and six bronze medals as well as 44 world and twelve European championship titles.

Körner was a professor for physical culture at the Berlin Humboldt University and from 1971 a professor.

At the international level, Körner was a member of the FISA World Rowing Association from 1972 to 1992 and chairman of the FISA Competitive Sports Committee from 1976 to 1986. He was awarded the Guts Muths Prize and the National Prize of the GDR. From 1989 to 1995 Köhler worked abroad in Australia (as a consultant) and Italy (as technical director). During Köhler's tenure, the Italian team won a silver and a bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics .

In collaboration with the Swiss sports doctor Hans Howaldt, Körner developed the world's first anti-doping program for an international association based on training controls.

In 2008, the German Rowing Association made him an honorary member.
