Theodor Kewitsch

Carl Theodor Blasius Kewitsch (born February 3, 1834 in Posilge , West Prussia , † July 18, 1903 in Berlin ) was a music teacher, music editor and composer in West Prussia and Berlin.

Life

The father Ferdinand Theodor Kewitsch was a teacher and organist, the mother was Anna Catharina, née Greifenhagen. The father's family was evidently of Polish origin (Kiewicz), the mother was probably Jewish. The brothers Johannes and Alois later became piano and harmonium makers in Berlin and Warsaw, respectively. When the boy was one year old, the family moved to Pelplin, where he spent his childhood.

Around 1854 Theodor Kewitsch was a military musician (trombonist) in the Infantry Regiment "von Borcke" No. 21 in Bromberg . After that he was a teacher and organist in Wabcz, Schwetz and Graudenz . In 1866 he became a music teacher at the Royal Catholic Teachers' Seminar in Berent (today Kościerzyna ), in 1873 senior teacher and in 1884/85 acting director ( directorate administrator ). In 1887 Kewitsch retired from teaching at the age of 53.

He went to Berlin and worked there as an editor for various music and military music magazines.

Theodor Kewitsch composed some small orchestral works, military music and songs, and arranged some works for other ensembles.
