Theodor Ludwig Lau (born June 15, 1670 in Königsberg , † February 1740 in Altona ) was a German lawyer and philosopher of the Enlightenment .

Life

Theodor Ludwig Lau was a son of the lawyer Philipp Lau (1622–1682). From 1685 he studied philosophy, theology and law in Königsberg . In 1694/95 he studied another year in Halle and then toured the Netherlands, England and France. After that he was in the service of the Duke of Courland , Friedrich Wilhelm Kettler until 1711 . In 1717 he was raised to the imperial nobility under the name Lau von Löwenstern . He published his deist - Spinozist views in 1717 and 1719 ; the books were banned very quickly. From 1727 he stayed in his hometown again, but soon ran into difficulties here too when his authorship of these books became known. From 1736 he lived in Altona under a false name. He died in the deepest poverty.
