Erich Wilhelm Donnert (born June 18, 1928 in Altrohlau , Czechoslovakia ; † November 24, 2016 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German historian and Slavist .

Life

After national labor service and military service as an air force helper and Wehrmacht soldier from 1944 to 1945, after being expelled from Czechoslovakia in 1946 and working as an unskilled worker, Erich Donnert studied humanities at the University of Halle-Wittenberg from 1949 to 1953 . There he was in 1955 with the dissertation studies to assess the Slavs in the written tradition of the German early Middle Ages from 7 to early 11th century Dr. phil. for Slavic Studies doctorate.

In 1957 Erich Donnert began teaching as a lecturer in the history of Eastern Europe at the University of Jena , where he completed his habilitation in 1961 with the thesis The Livonian War and the Baltic Question in European Politics 1558–1583 . The history of Eastern Europe remained his subject until 1964 in Jena and from 1964 to 1967 at the University of Leipzig . In 1967 he returned to the University of Halle-Wittenberg when he accepted the offer for general history . In 1993 he was retired there.

After his retirement , Erich Donnert remained very active as a historian and published numerous books, particularly on Russian history.
