Theodor Piening

Peter Karl Theodor Piening (born July 16, 1831 in Meldorf in Süderdithmarschen, † August 14, 1906 in Hamburg ) was a Low German author.

Piening attended the Meldorfer School of Academics (grammar school). From 1849 to 1850 he took part in the Schleswig-Holstein uprising against Denmark. From 1851 to 1853 he studied philology in Kiel and Göttingen. In 1856 he received his doctorate in Giessen. From 1855 Piening worked as a private teacher in Hamburg, then as a writer there. His Reis na'n Hamborger Dom (Hamburg 1859), a humorous description of the visit of rural residents to the big city, is one of the most widely read Low German works of the 19th century. It had 20 editions by 1925 and was then reprinted several times in 1972 and 1973.
