Theophil Rothenberg

Theophil Rothenberg (born June 13, 1912 in Solingen - Gräfrath , North Rhine-Westphalia , † September 29, 2004 in Berlin ) was a German Protestant church musician and editor.

Live and act

Teophil Rothenberg grew up in a family who loved singing and was influenced by the singing movement (Walther Hensel, Fritz Jöde, Richard Gölz). He was the brother of Samuel Rothenberg . He studied from 1931 to 1936 at the church music school in Berlin-Spandau. From 1936 he was cantor, first in Berlin-Köpenick, then until 1994 in Berlin-Mahlsdorf. He belonged to the Confessing Church . From 1952 he was a state attendant for Berlin. From 1952 to 1991 he was a music lecturer at the Evangelische Verlagsanstalt Berlin. He was also a lecturer at the Paulinum Preacher School in Berlin. With his adaptations and publications he contributed to the popularity of Negro Spirituals in the church sector in the German-speaking area, for example with “Go tell it on the mountain” - “Go call it on the mountain”.

His grave is in the Mahlsdorf forest cemetery .
