The Paulinum (since 1992 the Paulinum Theological Seminary ) was a Protestant training center in Berlin .

history

From 1946 to 1999, the "Paulinum" was a training center for pastors , city missionaries and preachers . The prerequisites for study were completed vocational training (no Abitur), experience in professional and community life and the minimum age of 21 years. The sponsor was the (then) Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg together with the other regional churches and ecclesiastical organizations of the GDR (Berlin City Mission, Regional Church Community, Evangelical Young Men’s Association).

The Paulinum was founded in 1946 on the initiative of the director of the Berlin city mission , Pastor Hans Dannenbaum (1895–1956), for so-called “late-calling”, initially especially for returnees from war and captivity. In the time of the GDR, the Paulinum was also used as a route to the rectory by students who were not admitted to high school and university studies, as well as by those who were interested in seminars. The training initially lasted two years. In 1956 it was extended to three years and in 1979 to four years and, with the exception of training in the ancient languages , made comparable to academic theology studies. The graduates were legally and financially equal to the academically trained theologians.

The Paulinum was initially housed in the rooms of the Berlin City Mission in Neuköllner Lenaustraße, and from 1949 in the house of the Berlin Mission in Georgenkirchstraße in Friedrichshain. Since 1993 it has been working in the seminar building of the former church college in Zehlendorf on Leuchtenburgstrasse. Mainly for financial reasons, the Berlin-Brandenburger Church decided to close the Paulinum in 1996, which then took place on June 30, 1999 after the final graduation.

A total of 1,000 people were enrolled at the Paulinum, including women in the early 1950s and then since 1964. Around 800 people passed the first theological examination or the preacher's examination there.

In 1998 the association "Paulinum eV" was founded in order to keep alive the idea of seminaristic training for the pastor's profession.
