Erich Schuppan

Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Schuppan (born March 23, 1915 in Eberswalde ; † September 3, 2006 there ) was a German Protestant pastor.

Life

After graduating from secondary school (1935), he first studied at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin. Because of his contacts with the illegal Theological Seminary of the Confessing Church , he was expelled and moved to Church University. He was ordained pastor by the latter in 1941 and worked as a pastor for the Confessing Church in the Eberswalde mental hospital until 1945 . His activity brought him into further conflicts with National Socialism and he and his wife were questioned by the Gestapo . After the end of the war he was committed to helping refugees and the like. a. by setting up a station mission . He was appointed superintendent in 1961 and general superintendent of the district of Eberswalde in 1978 . In 1983, Schuppan retired.

In retirement he participated in the training of deacons and pastors in Berlin and Potsdam. In 1986 the church leadership commissioned him to lead a working group on the church struggle in order to work through the time of National Socialism for the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg . The results of this working group and other research have been published in several books of which he is the editor.

Honors

In 1995 Schuppan was made an honorary citizen of the city of Eberswalde and in 2001 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .

On May 13, 2007, a street next to the Maria Magdalenen Church , his former place of work in Eberswalde, was named after him. In the spring of 2009 his library was given to the Ziesar Castle Museum.
