The Martin Gropius Hospital (spelling Martin Gropius Hospital ) is a specialist hospital for neurology and psychiatry in Eberswalde . The building complex was built in the 1860s.

history

The building was built by the Berlin architect Martin Gropius from 1862 to 1865 on behalf of the state estates of the Kurmark Brandenburg as the “Land-Irren-Anstalt Neustadt-Eberswalde”. The result was an aesthetically pleasing, functional and representative facility in a block system. It established Gropius' reputation as the leading hospital architect of his time. His design was groundbreaking for the pavilion system that came up a little later .

Until around 1942 the building complex was operated as a mental hospital of the state institution of the province of Brandenburg , then the Wehrmacht used the facility as a hospital .

After the end of the Second World War , the occupying power, the Red Army , used the main building as a hospital until 1994 . The German mental hospital was housed in outbuildings.

After the fall of the Wall and German reunification , the hospital passed from the former municipal property to the property of the State of Brandenburg, which founded its own operating company as a GmbH . After the Soviet troops left Germany in 1994, the building complex was completely renovated between 1997 and 2002. Then the mental hospital moved back into the building. In order to be able to operate all state clinics and medical facilities in Brandenburg efficiently, the state government organized a tender in 2004, which was won by the GLG Gesellschaft für Leben und Gesundheit mbH . In 2006, the rural districts of Barnim and Uckermark together with the city of Eberswalde became carriers (partners) in the ratio of 71.1% / 25.1% and 3.8%. The hospital got its current name, with which it honors the architect of the facility.
