Moon crater Theophilus is a circular depression in the bottom of the Earth's moon near the visible center of the moon. Like many so-called ring mountains , it has a high ring-shaped wall ( crater rim ) and a group of central mountains in the middle . It is named after Theophilus of Alexandria .
Its diameter is 105 kilometers, its wall height over six kilometers. They had previously thought due to its shape so as volcanic be origin, but nearly all lunar craters by impacts from meteorites originated. The asteroid that hit the Ringgebirge was about three miles across. Due to the material thrown out in the explosion, the bottom of the impact crater is slightly lower than the surroundings.
In selenographic coordinates specified, Theophilus is between 10 ° and 13 ° S latitude, 25 ° and -28 ° of east longitude. The inner slope of its wall has clear terraces , which makes it one of the most beautiful moon objects.
