Therese von Sachsen-Altenburg, Duchess of Dalekarlien

Therese (Swedish: Teresia ) Amalie Karoline Josephine Antoinette von Sachsen-Altenburg (born December 21, 1836 in Ansbach , † November 9, 1914 in Stockholm ) was a princess of Sachsen-Altenburg and by marriage Duchess of Dalekarlien .

Life

Therese was the eldest daughter of Prince Eduard von Sachsen-Altenburg (1804–1852) from his first marriage to Amalie (1815–1841), daughter of Prince Karl von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen . After the death of her father, Therese first lived at the court of her cousin Queen Marie in Hanover and then with her uncle, Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen .

She married Prince August of Sweden , Duke of Dalekarlien (1831–1873) in Altenburg on April 16, 1864 . At that time Therese was already 28 years old and an orphan. The marriage was considered happy and remained childless. Both August and Therese were not considered intelligent. August used to refer to his wife as his "little Hoppetosse ". The marriage ended after nine years in 1873 with the death of August.

In her long widowhood, Therese often suffered from "nervous breakdowns", during which she became increasingly brutally aggressive towards her employees. More and more of a burden for the Swedish court, she was declared insane in 1875 and sent to Switzerland under the pseudonym of a Countess von Dahlskiöld. She lived there for many years in Neuchâtel, where she bought a villa. In 1890 she returned to Sweden and lived in Haga Castle until her death . Here she composed music and was active in charities. She had a particularly close relationship with Prince Erik Gustaf, who suffered from epilepsy .

Therese is buried in Riddarholm Church in Stockholm .
