Thermus thermophilus is a gram negative eubacterium and is used in many biotechnological processes. Optimal growth is between 49 and 72 ° C, so the bacterium is very thermophilic . Thermus thermophilus was found in hot springs in Japan and is divided into several subtypes. The HB8 and HB27 subtypes, the genome of which was deciphered in 2004, are themost common ones.
A thermostable polymerase (Tth) relevant for the polymerase chain reaction is obtained from Thermus thermophilus . It catalyzes with optimal activity at 70 to 80 ° C. The enzyme needs divalent ions.
