Thieplatz by Räbke

The Thieplatz von Räbke is a Thieplatz in Räbke in Lower Saxony . The chestnut-lined, approximately 70 × 70-meter square is located on the northern edge of the village. He is the only Thie in the Braunschweiger Land that has been preserved in its former size. Today the area, which was designated as a landscape protection area in 1966, is used as a fairground .

history

Axes and hatchets from around 4000 to 3000 BC were found on Thieplatz. BC, which prove that the area was already settled in the Neolithic . Found spindle whorls and shards of ceramic vessels testify to the use of the square in the Middle Ages . In the southwest of the square there used to be seven linden trees on the small hill. According to a local legend, the trees were planted for seven officers who died in the Thirty Years War . Allegedly, Frederick the Great liked the trees so much on his honeymoon that he took a rest under the trees. The linden trees were felled in the 1970s and replanted on the site. Presumably the court was originally located here. Whether the hill is a prehistoric barrow can only be determined by an archaeological excavation . The Thie is the oldest representation on maps from the 18th century.

The Thie has long been used as the village's fairground. In the 19th century bridal dances took place on it at weddings. On St. John's Day in June, the flag festival was celebrated on the square. In 1914, the outbreak of the First World War on the Thie was announced to the citizens of Räbker . In 1955, the municipality of Räbke planned to build a gym on the Thie, which prevented the Helmstedt district from being designated as a protected part of the landscape in 1958 on the basis of an expert report by the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum für Geschichte und Volkstum . Today, the three-day Räbker Summer Festival with a marquee, dance and carousel takes place on the Thie every year.

In 2015, a new information board on the history of the square was set up on Thie.
