Thirteen (often spelled TH13TEEN ) in Alton Towers ( Alton , Staffordshire , United Kingdom ) is a family steel roller coaster from the manufacturer Intamin , which opened on March 20, 2010. It was built on the site where the Corkscrew roller coaster was previously .
The designers Candy Holland from Merlin Studios and John Wardley used some effects and elements in the design that are supposed to create psychological fear in the passenger. This is how they created the name "Psychoaster". Thirteen was therefore advertised by the park as the “scariest rollercoaster in the world” in the run-up to the opening of the park. In the course of the construction of the railway, the previous subject area "Ug-Land" was redesigned to become the "Dark Forest". The existing shops have been painted darker colors and decorated with artificial roots that appear to have grown out of the ground. The launch roller coaster "Rita - Queen of Speed" was renamed " Rita " and its station and trains were redesigned accordingly. The park invested around £ 15 million in construction and design .
The theme of the "Dark Forest" continues in the waiting area and in the Thirteen station. The station is dimly lit and gloomy music should get the visitors in the mood for the ride. The trains have 5 cars for 4 people each in two rows, the passengers are secured by lap bars. After leaving the station, the trains take a small descent down into a left curve. It follows a height of 20 m reach Lifthill with friction drive. A steep first descent follows the lift hill . This is followed by a few small airtime hills (bunny hops) and curves through a wooded area before the train comes to a stop in a building in the dark. The rail sags vertically a few meters in a room designed as a crypt. After the fall, the train is accelerated backwards through a dark tunnel. After another stop in the open air, the train travels forward back to the station after a journey time of around two minutes.
