Thomas Classen (born April 24, 1962 in Mettmann ) is a former German heavyweight professional boxer. Hans-Hermann Weyer ("the beautiful consul") is his stepfather.

amateur

As an amateur, Classen was junior heavyweight champion and boxed in the 1st Bundesliga. He twice defeated Peter Hussing , who was unbeaten in the Bundesliga for 13 years.

Professional career

On September 10, 1983 Thomas Classen made his professional debut and won against Rocky Burton in Cologne on points. The Düsseldorf local hero was under contract with Wilfried Sauerland . After further fights, such as against Horst Lang, Ergun Aydogan and Damiens Marignan, who all had negative match statistics, he went up against Charly Graf . On October 5, 1984, Classen fought in Frankfurt am Main against Graf, who had started a comeback from prison . The fight, which was scheduled for six rounds, ended in a draw. In September 1985 he lost to Andre van den Oetelaar by knockout in round four. On November 8, 1985 he defeated Novak Radanović on points.

Thomas Classen appeared again on November 29, 1985 in Frankfurt against Charly Graf and won the German heavyweight championship on points; the decision of the judges was criticized from many sides and is now generally regarded as a wrong judgment. After his victory over Graf Classen was to defend his title against Reiner Hartmann in 1986 . However, due to tension with his wife, Hartmann canceled the fight. In February 1986 Classen boxed only a draw against Mbuyamba Kalombo and lost on May 12, 1986 against the British Al Malcolm by knockout in round two.

In 1987 Classen was supposed to fight Mario Guedes . The fight contract had already been signed, but the difficult-to-lead defending champion finally canceled twice. “It was well known how things were with Thomas's nerves and what problems his management had with him. Thomas is a fine guy, right. I have respect for the person Thomas Classen, so I don't hold the rejection against him. "(Mario Guedes)

Another weak point of Thomas Classen was that despite his muscular appearance he did not have a great punch and could only barely beat one-dimensional boxers. In December 1987 he defeated Ramon Voorn on points, in March 1988 he boxed against Rick Kellar again in a draw and then ended his career as a boxer after 21 professional fights.

In 2014 Thomas Classen gave Charly Graf the championship plaque to his opponent at the time for the German championship in recognition of an ARD documentary about his life in recognition of his performance in the fight at that time. (Source: Solinger Tagblatt - September 28, 2014)
