Reiner Hartmann (born April 18, 1958 in Frankfurt am Main , † April 17, 2003 in Fort Lauderdale ) was a German heavyweight professional boxer .

Amateur career

Hartmann started boxing at Eintracht Frankfurt , later he boxed for CSC Frankfurt . In 1979 he became German amateur heavyweight champion and then took part unsuccessfully at the 1979 European championships in Cologne .

Professional career

In 1980 Hartmann turned professional at the age of 22. He moved to the USA , trained in Miami with Angelo Dundee and completed his first twelve professional fights there. During this time he was also Muhammad Ali's sparring partner . There he met his future wife Jaqueline.

In 1981 he suffered his first loss as a professional against Dorcey Gaymon. In his thirteenth professional fight, he went to Frankfurt in September 1982 against the German champion Bernd August and lost by technical knockout in the eighth round. He returned to the USA and faced Gaymon again in the next fight and this time won on points. In November 1983 there was also a rematch with August, which he was also able to win.

He defended the German championship title once before he had to hand it over to Charly Graf in May 1985 . After an eyebrow injury, the fight was controversially broken off by the referee in the seventh round. At this point Hartmann was ahead on the scorecards, but the audience's sympathies were with his opponent. In the revenge fight against Graf three months later, there was another controversial draw. He then lost prematurely to former European champion and later World Cup challenger Steffen Tangstad from Norway by knockout in round 7.

His next fight was to be a title fight against the Graf conqueror Thomas Classen in 1986 . However, due to tension with his wife, he canceled the fight, returned to the United States, and retired.

After boxing

Hartmann worked after his career as a sales representative for sunglasses and lived with his wife and two daughters in Fort Lauderdale. In 2002 he separated from his wife. On April 17, 2003, Reiner Hartmann shot himself in his girlfriend's house.
