Thomas Crofton Croker

Thomas Crofton Croker (born January 15, 1798 in Cork , † August 8, 1854 in London ) was an Irish archaeologist.

Life

He dedicated himself to the collection of ancient poetry and folklore from the Irish cultural area. He helped found the Percy and Camden Societies. Together with his wife, he examined funeral and mourning rituals. His fairy tale collection Irish Elf Tales ( Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland ) (1825-28) appeared in six editions; the first volume was translated into German in 1826 by the Brothers Grimm . Croker died in 1854 and was buried in Brompton Cemetery, London.
