Thomas Donald Carter
Thomas Donald Carter , mostly written T. Donald Carter , (born January 28, 1893 in Boonton , New Jersey , † March 30, 1972 in Denville , New Jersey) was an American zoologist . He worked as assistant to Lee Crandall at the Bronx Zoo and later became assistant curator of mammals at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City .

Thomas Donald Carter was born in 1893 in Boonton Township, New Jersey, United States. Carter also grew up in the village, which was now mostly located under the Jersey City Reservoir . After high school, he attended Blair Academy in Blairstown , New Jersey, for a year before taking a job as the zookeeper's assistant at the Bronx Zoo . Here he worked closely with John Quinn (1870-1936), the first zoo keeper of the zoological garden. As the personal assistant to the chief curator of the Bronx Zoo, ornithologist Lee Crandall , Carter first took part in an expedition in 1914. This took them to Costa Rica , from where they returned to their homeland after six weeks of field research with over 300 living mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects. After a few years in the New York Zoo, he began working at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City in 1920 . There he rose to the position of assistant curator of mammals and worked for this institution for 40 years. In the course of his career there, he took part in 27 major expeditions to distant countries and traveled to Africa , West China , Indochina , Brazil , Guyana and various other wild and inaccessible places on earth. Over the years he had collected over 10,000 copies for the museum on Central Park West . Throughout his life he wrote countless writings and books that were published by various publishers. On March 30, 1972, Thomas Donald Carter died at his home in Denville , New Jersey, aged 79 .
