Thomas Ernst Josef Wiedemann

Thomas Ernst Josef Wiedemann (born May 14, 1950 in Karlsruhe ; † June 28, 2001 in Nottingham ) was a British ancient historian .

Life

His grandmother was Jewish and his father Heinrich was fortunate that he was not sent to a concentration camp in the east. He was able to hide with a Catholic priest and thus survive World War II . After the war the family lived in Baden , but moved to London in 1953 . Wiedemann was at Catholic High School in Finchley trained (Wiedemann was Catholic), after which he studies at Hertford College of Oxford University began. After successfully completing his studies, he continued research as a doctoral student for two years. After Wiedemann had worked for a year (1975-1976) as a researcher at the Warburg Institute (University of London) in London, he was hired in 1976 by the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Bristol . He married Margaret Hunt in 1985, with whom he had two sons and a daughter.

In 1995 he moved to the University of Nottingham as a professor of Latin , where he was also head of classical studies from 1997.
