Thomas Günther (born August 8, 1967 in Hennigsdorf , Oranienburg district , GDR ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2004 to 2018 he was a member of the Brandenburg State Parliament .

Life

Thomas Günther attended the Polytechnic High School "Johann Wolfgang von Goethe" in Hennigsdorf from 1974 to 1984 . From 1984 to 1987 he completed vocational training (with a high school diploma) as a mechanical engineer at VEB Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke (LEW) "Hans Beimler" . This was followed by a degree in socialist business administration at the Technical University of Leipzig . After the end of the GDR he studied political science at the Free University of Berlin with a degree in political science . After completing his studies, he worked as a research assistant for Lothar Kliesch (1997 to 1999) and Alwin Ziel (1999 to 2004). Thomas Günther is married.

Thomas Günther has been a member of the SPD since November 1989 and, with interruptions, a member of the Hennigsdorf city ​​council . In the course of the 2014 municipal elections, he returned to the Hennigsdorf city council and was elected chairman. From 1998 to October 2004 he was managing director in the SPD sub-district of Oberhavel.

Thomas Günther has been a member of the Brandenburg State Parliament since October 2004. He was elected to the state parliament in 2004, 2009 and 2014 (direct mandate in the constituency of Oberhavel I ).

Since the beginning of his mandate he has been a member of the Committee for Infrastructure and Spatial Planning as well as the Committee for Rural Development, Environment and Consumer Protection . From October 27, 2004 to October 26, 2005 he was a member of the Committee for Education, Youth and Sport . In addition, he has been a member of the Petitions Committee since October 27, 2005 and from February 28, 2008 to 2009, he was one of three Social Democrats in the Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry 4/1 ("Clarification of procedural practice in the implementation of the regulations for handling land reform according to Art. 233 EGBGB and the responsibility of the Brandenburg state governments in this process " ).

On September 24, 2017, Thomas Günther was elected mayor of Hennigsdorf for a term of eight years with 67.4% of the valid votes . He resigned his state parliament mandate at the beginning of February 2018.
