Berchtold von Kremsmünster

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Berchtold von Kremsmünster (* before 1270; † 1326 or later), also called Bernardus Noricus , was a historian and chronicler .

The name Bernardus Noricus goes back to Johannes Aventinus . Only more recent research has taken Berchtold, who has testified as a scribe, into consideration as a possible author. He entered the Kremsmünster monastery in the 1880s . He became a deacon in 1290 and has been in the monastery scriptorium since 1292 . He was ordained a priest in 1300 . For some time he worked as a Scholasticus. In 1319 he traveled to Avignon . He died on a February 2nd , probably 1326.

Berchtold created a Urbar , composed a Reimoffizium and worked as a curator working the Collegiate Church of Kremsmünster. But his importance lies primarily in his work as a historian. He wrote the “Historia Cremifanensis” and the “Narratio de ecclesia Cremsmunstrensi”, which are among the “historical sources of Kremsmünster”. The "Historia Cremifanensis" encompasses the history of Kremsmünster from its foundation to Abbot Friedrich von Aich. The “Narratio de ecclesia Cremsmunstrensi” deals in a first section with the foundation of the monastery, in a second the decline and the present. In many other books there are notes, glosses , cross-references, additions, but also longer texts from his hand. At the time, the Kremsmünster library contained around 400 works.
