Thomas Girtin (born February 18, 1775 in London ; † November 9, 1802 there ) is one of the most famous landscape watercolorists in England .

Life

In 1789 Girtin was an apprentice to Edward Dayes and in 1794 had his first exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts . In the same year Girtin worked with William Turner for his patron Thomas Monro . As a 21-year-old, the young artist traveled through England and was inspired by the cities, which strongly influenced his drawings.

Girtin's greatest challenge was the painting Eidometropolis , a panorama painted in oil with a height of 5.5 meters and a circumference of 33 meters, which he painted shortly before his death in the spring and summer of 1802. Girtin put a lot of emphasis on accuracy and subtle drawings. In 1800 he married Mary Ann Borrett, who gave birth to their son Thomas Calvert a year later. Girtin suffered from asthma and died in 1802 at the age of 27 in his native London.
