Thomas Hess (business IT specialist)

Thomas Hess (born July 3, 1967 in Darmstadt ) is a German business IT specialist .

Hess studied business informatics at the TU Darmstadt ; after graduating in 1992, he conducted research at the University of St. Gallen and at the Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). In 1995 he was awarded a Dr. oec. PhD .

Subsequently, in 1996 and 1997 he worked as an assistant to the executive board at Bertelsmann AG . From 1998 he headed a working group at the Institute for Information Systems at the University of Göttingen , where he completed his habilitation in 2001 .

After holding a professorship at the University of Augsburg , he accepted a call in 2001 at the Institute for Information Systems and New Media at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . His main research interests are the digital transformation of companies and the management of media and IT companies. In 2017 he was appointed a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In addition, Hess is co-spokesman for the Internet Business Cluster , a platform for cooperation between media and Internet companies with university institutes in the Munich region, and a member of the board of directors of the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (BIDT), an interdisciplinary research institute for research into social issues Consequences of digitization. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Digital Technology and Management (CDTM) in Munich, a joint research and teaching institute of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU), which is part of the Elite Network Bavaria offers the interdisciplinary, international degree in Technology Management.

Hess is co-editor of the journals Journal of Management Information Systems, Electronic Markets as well as International Journal on Media Management and MedienWirtschaft.
