Thomas Jank (born April 29, 1949 in Burg , Cottbus district ; † August 16, 2007 ) was a German engineer.

Life

After studying engineering in physics and mathematics at the University of Kaiserslautern, he worked as a doctoral candidate at the Institute for High Frequency Technology and Radar Systems at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen . With his dissertation on antennas on airplanes he received in October 1979, the Promotion Dr. Ing.

From 1979 he moved to the DLR Institute for Atmospheric Physics (IPA), in the Cloud Physics and Traffic Meteorology Department, where he dealt with issues of radar exploration. For the next twenty years he worked on investigations with the Doppler radar , with which both cloud measurements and measurements of precipitation could be made. He supervised the polarization radar of the DLR (Polarization Diversity Doppler Radar / POLDIRAD) scientifically and technically.

Thomas Jank participated in numerous meteorological measurement experiments at DLR and in scientific measurement campaigns, the last time being northwest of Strasbourg in summer 2007. POLDIRAD was used for the highly precise measurement of precipitation fields and served as an essential monitoring instrument for the international measurement campaign COPS, which was carried out for the Germans The research community, the Helmholtz Association (DLR) and the United Nations World Weather Research Program examined thunderstorms, especially in low mountain ranges. Further research concerned questions of models of the atmosphere, the construction and testing of mesoscaline models of atmospheric flow and clouds (MESOSCOP) and exploratory measurements from on board research aircraft. Furthermore, he took on tasks as a pilot and flight instructor within the DLR flight operations and carried out important meteorological research flight missions on board the ASK16 for the IPA. a. in Germany, Austria, Norway and Spain. Since 1976 he has combined this activity with the possibilities of the aviation group in the DLR Oberpfaffenhofen eV, of which he has been the first director since 1993.

He began his aviation career in 1976 as a glider pilot, from motor glider pilot to motor airplane pilot, flight instructor, aircraft attendant and aerobatic pilot, he developed his flying experience further and through additional training abroad. For example, he acquired the instrument flight license (IFR) in the USA, the entry for seaplanes in Canada and the license for glacier landings in Switzerland. From 2004 to 2007, Thomas Jank advocated the merger of the local aviation clubs, the Luftsportclub Dornier e. V. (LSC) and Motorfluggruppe Dornier e. V. (MFG) with its aviation group in the DLR Oberpfaffenhofen e. V. (FSG) and became the 1st board member of this merged aviation group with 400 members in the departments of gliding / motor gliding, powered flight, parachuting and an aircraft park with 25 sports aircraft.
