Thomas M. Beckley

Thomas Malloy Beckley (born March 2, 1922 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ; died January 31, 1987 in Vail , Colorado ) was an American railroad manager. He was president of the Soo Line Railroad .

Life

Thomas M. Beckley graduated from the Blake School in Minneapolis in 1939 and then studied at Yale University . In 1943 he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in economics. He then studied law at Harvard Law School , which he graduated in 1948.

After graduating, he began working as a lawyer at Stinchfield, Mackall, Crounse & Moore (later Mackall Crounse & Moore, now DeWitt LLP) in Minneapolis. From 1952 he worked for the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railroad , from the beginning of 1959 he worked as senior lawyer and general secretary. With the merger of DSS & A to Soo Line Railroad in 1961 he became general secretary of this new company. He later became assistant to President Leonard H. Murray . In 1968 he became vice president. In November 1978 he became President and Chief Operating Officer and from January 1, 1980 Chief Executive Officer of Soo Line Railroad. In early 1983 he handed over the position of President to his successor Dennis Miles Cavanaugh and took over the position of Chairman of the Board. In April 1984, Cavanaugh also assumed the position of chief executive officer. In 1984 he was involved in founding the Soo Line Corporation holding company, which prepared the takeover of Milwaukee Road . In April 1985, he retired as Chairman of the Board, but retained his position on the Supervisory Board. He then worked as a consultant for the railway company until his death.

Thomas Beckley has served on the boards of the First National Bank of Minneapolis , Malt-O-Meal Company, Blake School Alumni Association, and Junior Achievement. He was also chairman of the board of directors of the Minnesota Committee on Crime and Justice and sat on the board of directors of the Dunwoody Institute, the Viking Council of Boy Scouts of America . He was also a member of several non-profit associations and clubs.

Thomas Beckley died of a heart attack while on a ski vacation in Vail.

In 1951 he married Nancy Margret Arntsen (1923–2007). The couple had four daughters.
