Dennis Miles Cavanaugh

Dennis Miles Cavanaugh (born September 19, 1937 in Los Angeles ) is an American railroad manager and former president of the Soo Line Railroad .

Life

The son of Edward and Louella Olson Cavanaugh graduated from the University of Minnesota and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1965 . Even before his studies, he worked from 1955 as an office assistant for Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad . From 1957 to 1961 he served in the United States Navy .

Even after completing his studies, he was employed by the railway company now trading as Soo Line Railroad. Initially as an assistant Trainmaster, he worked in the engineering department from 1969 to 1972. In 1972 he became director for transport planning and in 1974 general superintendent and was thus responsible for all traffic planning in the network. In 1977 he became assistant to the vice president and in 1978 first general manager Transportation and Maintenance and later vice president for operations.

He became Executive Vice President in 1981 and President in 1983 to succeed Thomas M. Beckley . In this position he was Chief Operating Officer from 1983 to 1984 . With the establishment of the Soo Line Corporation holding company in 1984, he became Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of that company. He was also elected Chief Executive Officer of the railway company. His tenure included the integration of the Milwaukee Road network, which was taken over in 1985 , the creation of the Lake State Transportation Division and the sale of this division to the newly founded Wisconsin Central Ltd. With the sale and optimization of the route network, he tried to bring the railway company back into profitability.

In spring 1989 he was replaced by Edwin V. Dodge as President and Chief Executive Officer of both companies as part of the complete takeover of the railway company by the parent company Canadian Pacific Railway . On September 20, 1989, he also gave up his chairmanship of the supervisory board.

From the beginning of the 1990s he was involved in local politics in the Twin Cities , particularly with regard to local transport. In 1997 he was elected to the City Council of St. Anthony. In 1999 he won the election of Mayor of St. Anthony and was in office until 2001.

He has been married to Marilyn J. Scovil since 1965. The couple have two children.
