The Thomas Mann Society Düsseldorf e. V. is a literary society that researches and disseminates the work of the German writer Thomas Mann . It was founded on the initiative of a group of young scientists at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . The society offers its members and guests a program of lectures and readings on the life and work of Thomas Mann.

A foundation for scientific work on Thomas Mann is the Thomas Mann collection “Dr. Hans Otto Mayer ” . This collection was acquired in the 1920s by the Düsseldorf bookseller and historian Dr. Dr. hc Hans-Otto Mayer (1903–1983) founded. This unique special library and documentation center was opened in 1969 thanks to a donation from the Düsseldorf banker Rudolf Groth through the Society of Friends and Supporters of the University of Düsseldorf e. V. and donated to the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. The Thomas Mann collection “Dr. Hans Otto Mayer ”today comprises more than 30,000 documents and is continuously updated. It is located in the special reading room of the University and State Library in Düsseldorf . In addition to the Thomas Mann Archive in Zurich and the Buddenbrookhaus in Lübeck, it is the most important research center on Thomas Mann and his family in the German-speaking area. It is considered to be a stimulus for Thomas Mann research.

The writer Thomas Mann is particularly connected to the city of Düsseldorf through his story Die Betrogene , which was written between 1952 and 1953 and depicts the last, deceptive spring of a Düsseldorf widow .
