Hans-Otto Mayer (born August 28, 1903 in Stuttgart , † February 22, 1983 in Düsseldorf ) was a German bookseller. He was a major collector of Thomas Mann's work.

Life

The factory owner's son Mayer studied history and German at the Eberhard Karls University . On April 26, 1922 he became active in the Corps Rhenania Tübingen . He proved himself twice as a senior and fought ten racket and four saber games . He became famous as the second of 499 lengths . With a doctoral thesis on August Ludwig Reyscher , he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . In 1927 he trained as a bookseller in Stuttgart . In 1932 he became managing director of the Langewort publishing house in Berlin , and from 1933 to 1937 he was a board member of the " Deutsche Verlagsanstalt Universitas " in Berlin. After moving to Düsseldorf in 1938, he began as an authorized signatory in the "Schrobsdorff'schen Buchhandlung" on Königsallee (Düsseldorf) , which he took over in 1943. From 1940 to 1945 he took part in World War II , most recently as Hauptsturmführer of the Waffen SS . After being in US captivity from 1945 to 1948, he continued the bookstore. In 1981 he sold them.

From the fascination for Thomas Mann awakened by reading Buddenbrooks , Mayer first collected editions available in bookshops, then also private and press prints and signed editions. When Thomas Mann's works became available again in Germany in the post-war period , he systematically expanded his collection. It includes over 6,000 volumes, 15,000 magazine issues and over 25,000 excerpts and documents on the life and work of Thomas Mann. The collection created in the private rooms forms the basis of the Thomas Mann Society in Düsseldorf . Thomas Mann himself is said to have said that Mayer had more books from him than he owned himself.
