Thomas Norton (* 1532 in London , † March 10, 1584 in Bedfordshire ) was an English poet and playwright , as well as a lawyer .

Life

Norton was born in London, raised in Cambridge , and admitted to the Inner Temple as a lawyer in 1555 . In 1562 he became a member of parliament. He participated in various political and religious controversies , spoke out against Catholicism in his works and acted as a prosecutor against Catholics. Norton is known not least as a co-author of “Gorboduc” , the first English tragedy to be written according to the classical model , which he wrote in 1560 together with Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset . "Gorboduc" was premiered in 1562 and printed in 1565. His poetry appeared in "Tottel's Miscellany" or "Songs and Sonnettes" (1557). Norton also translated Johannes Calvin's “Institutes” (1561).
