In 1996 Thomas Rainer and Hannes Medwentisch founded the band L'Âme Immortelle (French for “the immortal soul”), often abbreviated as LAI. She has existed for more than 20 years and has released numerous albums.

Since 2002, after co-founder Medwentisch left, Thomas Rainer and lead singer Sonja Kraushofer have continued as a duo. Rainer composes, sings and writes the lyrics for the electro band. In the early works of the band in particular, Rainer processed personal experiences, for example with the album Als die Liebe died : "The lyrics, and thus the concept of the album, trace my ordeal after a failed relationship."

The LAI debut album "Songs that bleed like wounds" was already successful. This was followed by numerous chart placements with their albums such as Then I have lived for free (48th place in Germany) or Gezeiten (16th place in Germany). The DVD + CD Disharmony  , released in 2003,  reached number nine in the German music DVD charts. The musician had the greatest chart success with Brennende Liebe , a joint single by L'Âme Immortelle and Oomph! . She stayed in the German single charts for ten weeks and reached number six.

Thomas Rainer with Nachtmahr, 2014

Thomas Rainer has been  traveling solo with the techno project  Nachtmahr since 2007 . The first publication Kunst ist Krieg was released in 2007 by Trisol (where all of his other bands are also under contract). The title also indicates the direction in which Thomas Rainer presents the band: Nachtmahr positions himself in the military with costumes, artwork and texts . Thomas Rainer is repeatedly criticized for this. He flirted with fascist symbolism, so the allegation. Rainer rejects this and emphasizes that the project is in no way political. In this regard, he emphasizes that these are military and not fascist images:

"I would like to elaborate on something: it's not fascist imagery, it's militaristic. There's a big difference. "
