Thomas Rymer Jones

Thomas Rymer Jones (born March 20, 1810 in Whitby , † December 10, 1880 in Castletown Road, West Kensington, London ) was a British zoologist and anatomist .

Life

Jones was the son of a captain in the Royal Navy and studied medicine at Guy's Hospital in London and Paris. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) in 1833 but was unable to practice because of his poor hearing. He was a student of Georges Cuvier in Paris.

From 1836 to 1874 he was Professor of Comparative Anatomy at King's College London . He was also from 1841 to 1844 Fullerian Professor of Physiology at the Royal Institution and later Examiner of Physiology at the University of London.

In addition to his textbook on comparative anatomy, which was a standard work at the time, he published popular scientific works on zoology.

In 1844 he became a member of the Royal Society .

His son Thomas Manson Rymer-Jones (1839-1894) was a railroad engineer who worked in Japan and Central America, among other places.

He also translated the birds section from Brehm's animal life and published an English edition (Cassel's Book of Birds, 1869–1873). He wrote many articles on comparative anatomy in Todd's Cyclopædia of Anatomy and Physiology .
