Thomas Tesdale (* 1547 in Stanford Dingley , England ; † June 13, 1610 in Glympton , Oxfordshire , England) was an English maltster , benefactor of the city of Abingdon in the English county of Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) and co-founder of Pembroke College in Oxford .

Life

Tesdale attended the John Roysse Free School in Abingdon (now Abingdon School). As a maltster, he became one of the richest citizens of the city, later head of the hospital and in 1581 mayor. However, he did not complete his term of office. He then bought the Ludwell manor house in Oxfordshire and raised cattle there.

He was married to Maud Stein, the marriage remained childless. Some of his fortune was bequeathed to his old school at Balliol College for scholarships from several scholars . In 1623 this money was topped up by Reverend Richard Wightwick of East Ilsley and used for the development of Broadgates Hall into Pembroke College , named after William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke .
