Thomas von Schallen

Thomas von Schallen (* around 1480 in St. Niklaus ; † 1541 ) was a Valais notary , politician and captain .

family

The von Schallen family has lived in Nikolaital or St. Niklaus since the 14th century . Around 1523 Thomas von Schallen left his home village of St. Niklaus after he had sold his house and property there. He lived with his family in Brig until after 1528 and then in Sion . He had previously sold his house in Brig. In 1538 he acquired the civil rights of Sitten. He was married twice and had at least 12 sons and daughters who received further education in Basel , among other places .

Professional and political career

From 1510 Thomas von Schallen was a notary. He also started his political career as Meier from St. Niklaus , being Meier and Grosskastlan of St. Niklaus in 1518 and 1519 .

Von Schallen was a member of the district council of Zenden Visp in Sion several times . On March 21, 1524, he took part in a federal assembly in Lucerne as a representative for the Valais . In 1539 he was made Kastlan of the Vice Dominate of Sion and in 1540 Grand Kastlan of the Valais capital.

Captain

From 1524 Thomas von Schallen carried the title of royal captain ( capitaneus regius ). As a captain, he led the army of the Zenden Goms , Brig and Visp in 1536 .
