geography

The Statepark is located in the municipality of East Berne and covers 308 acres (1.25 km²) in two separate areas. One area extends from the northwestern shore of Thompson's Lake, which gives it its name, to the north and the second area adjoins the John Boyd Thacher State Park on the edge of the Helderberg Escarpment , which rises steeply from the Hudson Valley . The Town of Knox is located between the two areas . With the exception of small areas at the height of the Helderberg Plateau, the park area is between 396  m and 426  m above sea level .

At the northern end of Thompson's Lake is also the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center , which was only established in 2001.

geology

The Helderberg Plateau consists of sediments from the Devonian Mountains and is one of the most fossil-rich deposits in the United States. The rock layers are raised to the northeast and form different levels, which are also followed by the course of the water. There are several lakes and wetlands in the vicinity. Just a few hundred meters to the west is another small lake with the Canada Geese reserve . This lake drains into Thompson's Lake and from there the runoff streams run to the edge of the Helderberg Escarpment, where they plunge into steep gorges and waterfalls into the plain of the Hudson Valley.

Facilities

Thompson's Lake State Park has a swimming beach, playground and sports fields, picnic areas, and nature trail , fishing and ice fishing, a boat ramp, camping for tents and RVs, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
