Thompson Escarpment

Thompson Escarpment is a steep, sloping to the east Escarpment in the West Antarctic Heritage Range . The approx. 8 nautical miles (approx. 15 km) long stratum lies at the head of the east-flowing Flanagan Glacier in the Pioneer Heights . To the west and north is the Schmidt glacier .

Thompson Escarpment was mapped by the United States Geological Survey as part of the survey of the Ellsworth Mountains in 1961-66 through field surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy . It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Commander Robert C. Thompson, Operations Officer of the US Navy, as part of the squadron Air Development Squadron Six (VX-6) on the Operation Deep Freeze participated 1965th
