Thoralf Knobloch mostly works with everyday motifs - objects , rooms or scenes from the immediate, familiar environment. Whether individual objects or views of the landscape , “there are always secondary scenes and fragments, narrowly defined, individually viewed sections of the visible world”.

The image composition works on the principle of the cutout. With great concentration on detail, the artist presents fragments as disused snapshots. “The painter's brush has the power to send optical and narrative disruptive elements into exile outside the canvas”.

His highly focused depictions appear far and near at the same time. For the painter, distancing is a means of observation. There is a certain longing , but also an interest in the diversity of the things and the outside world .

The strict, at first glance purely photo-realistic painting style is often supplemented by abstract, seemingly arbitrary details. That is why the pictures take on a surrealistic trait every now and then . Concentrating on one object prompts Knobloch to examine the selected motifs in series. The direction of view is shifted minimally, or it is switched from a full to a close-up. This is how painterly studies of objects and their appearance emerge.

Thoralf Knobloch's pictures evoke an inner slowdown in perception. The painter always returns to familiar places, takes on familiar objects again. Knobloch's paintings are primarily observational. They show everything and leave a lot open. They encourage reflection and trigger associations .

Knobloch opens up the aesthetic side of the objects and places that are not aesthetically remarkable in the usual sense. His pictures are “a plea for slowness and concentration, for deepening and expanding the everyday view by pausing and of course for the possibilities of painting to tear the banal object out of its banal context through aesthetic quality”.
