Thornell Schwartz

Thornell Schwartz (actually Thornel Schwartz , born May 29, 1927 in Philadelphia ; † December 30, 1977 ) was an American jazz guitarist who was best known in the 1960s for his participation in organ combos of soul jazz .

Live and act

Schwartz took classes at the Landis School of Music and began his professional career with Ernest Deaton at the age of 23. He then played in the R&B band of Chris Powell, from the early 1950s in the band of singer and drummer Don Gardner, which also included organist Jimmy Smith . From 1952 to 1955 he worked with Freddie Cole before playing with Jimmy Smith. From 1956 to 1967 he worked on several of the organist's albums such as A New Sound ... A New Star ... and The incredible Jimmy Smith Vol. 3 ; he also recorded with other musicians such as Big Joe Turner , Babs Gonzales , Joe Williams , Johnny Hammond Smith ( That Good Feelin ' ), Jimmy McGriff , Larry Young ( Young Blues ), Jimmy Forrest , Sylvia Syms , Byrdie Green , Groove Holmes and Milt Buckner . His only album under his own name Soul Cookin ' , in which Larry Young, Bill Leslie , Lawrence Olds , Jerome Thomas and Donald Bailey were involved, he presented in 1962 on Argo Records . In the field of jazz he was involved in 37 recording sessions between 1953 and 1975.
