Thymus sibthorpii is a plant from the genus of thyme ( Thymus ) in the family of Labiatae (Lamiaceae).

description

Thymus sibthorpii is a small shrub whose flower-bearing stems are 10 to 20 (to 30) cm long and grow upright to ascending, woody at the base and often branched. Usually the stems are hairy short all around or rarely only on two sides. Creeping, non-flower-bearing stems are not formed. The leaves are usually 10 to 15 mm long and 3 to 5 mm wide. They are short-stalked, elliptic-lanceolate, pointed, leathery and dotted with dense glands. The side veins are clearly visible.

The inflorescences are often branched and long. The bracts resemble the foliage leaves. The calyx is 2.5 to 3.5 (to 4) mm long, bell-shaped and usually greenish to straw-colored. The upper lip is longer than the calyx tube. The upper teeth are about 1 cm long, triangular to lanceolate and ciliate. The crown is light pink or red.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28 or 28 + 0-4B.

Occurrence

The area of Thymus sibthorpii extends from the Balkan Peninsula to northwest and central Turkey. It occurs in the floristic territories of Albania , Bulgaria , Greece , Romania , former Yugoslavia , European Turkey and Asian Turkey .

Systematics

The species was first collected in Greece by John Sibthorp at the end of the 18th century . When processing this collection, James Edward Smith misjudged its independence and classified this find in 1809 as Thymus lanceolatus Desf. to. The British botanist George Bentham realized 25 years later that it was a new species and published it in 1834 under the name Thymus sibthorpii in honor of the discoverer .

Important synonyms are Thymus korthiaticus Ronniger , Thymus macedonicus (Degen & Urum.) Ronniger , Thymus spectabilis Ronniger and Thymus tosevii Velen.
